Mavericks Assistant Coach Darrell Armstrong Arrested

Former NBA point guard and current Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, WFAA reports.

Armstrong, 56, was reportedly involved in an argument in which he allegedly hit a woman with a gun and threatened "I am going to shoot you," during an incident at an apartment complex in downtown Dallas at around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday (February 15). The victim was waiting in a nearby parking lot with her father when responding officers arrived at the scene.

The victim said she had been in a relationship with Armstrong since September 2024 and found a text message from another woman on his phone, which led to a verbal argument. Armstrong was reported to have been drunk and became irate during the altercation, demanding the apartment keys, which she gave to him, according to the affidavit.

Armstrong was then on the phone with another person when he picked up a pistol, walked around the kitchen island and struck the victim on the right side of her face with the weapon before loading the gun with a full magazine and threatening to "shoot" her. The victim told police she then left the apartment and walked to a nearby 7-Eleven store to wait for her family to arrive.

The victim was reported to have had a gun mark on her right cheek, according to the affidavit. A witness told police that Armstrong drinking and swearing at the victim during the incident.

Armstrong was detained at the apartment without incident. Officers found the pistol under the couch where the coach claimed to have been sleeping with a loaded magazine but no bullet in the chamber, the affidavit states.

Armstrong played for five NBA teams during his 14-year career, most notably the Orlando Magic, which included winning NBA Most Improved Player and NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 1999. The 56-year-old has served as the Mavericks' assistant coach since 2009, which included winning an NBA championship in 2011.
